Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition is the definitive way to play this cult-classic RPG - rosssheire

Planescape: Rack is one of the best Eternity Engine games and, by consensus, one of the best RPGs always made. It's a game/ideologic treatise/bizarre speculation on life and expiry that deserves to be played at to the lowest degree once by everyone.

And up until this week that took some doing. I should know—I just replayed Planescape in January, using a copy I bought in some D&D anthology a few years past. Oh, plus or so a six mods. This is the guide I followed, which recommended a widescreen mod, a UI mod to fix the widescreen mod, an unofficial fan patch to touch o the remaining bugs, the "Unfinished Business" patch to finish a bunch of fractional-finished call for lines, and the tweak pack which includes everything from a "Banter Accelerator" to modern creature comforts the like "Stackable Rings."

Here was the result of totally those mods. Playable, though the UI looked a bit imbricate.

The point is it was a infliction. Non impossible, nor do I wish to disbelieve the form done by these modders. They kept Planescape alive, almost 20 years after its release. But a push-down stack of cinque (or more) mods was a definite roadblock when introducing the game to newcomers.

That in beware, Planescape: Excruciate Enhanced Edition is a blessing. I've lauded plenty of praise on Beamdog's Infinity Engine revivals in the past—Baldur's Gate and its sequel plus Icewind Dale are all excellent restorations. Planescape is no disparate in that honour.

Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition Planescape: Crucify Enhanced Variant

IT's a museum piece, a working version of Planescape with most of the mods essentially baked in. Widescreen? Unflawed. User interface? Completely overhauled, ditching the strange circle-port of the original Planescape and bringing it more eligible with Baldur's Logic gate. You tooshie hold Tab to see interactional objects, you can plough on "Max HP" in the settings and avoid AD&ere;D's awful cube-undulate quirks, you behind activate obscure saves through Steam, you can zoom in and impossible with the mouse wheel (though be thrifty non to go too far in), robbery derriere be done automatically to spare yourself the hassle, and the text actually fits happening concealment and looks right sized—something I never quite managed even with Ghostdog's UI mod.

The mettlesome looks good. More than important, it looks polished in some respects the mods didn't reach. Mods made Planescape playable, but the Increased Version looks same a game built for modern PCs. There's a remainder, I predict.

Is it perfect? No. Around of the more interesting happy-centric mods have not made IT in, like the Kid Atom smasher, which speeds up how often companions talk to each new, and the aforementioned Unfinished Business sector wad, which equally I said repaired more or less of the quests that were left hanging in the original version. I'll make those sacrifices though for a version of Planescape that doesn't need an hour of prep time, and hopefully we'll see those mods ported over to the Enhanced Edition at around point in the future.

Planescape deserves to represent played, even today. It's still unmatchable of the weirdest RPGs ever ready-made, testament to the fact that video games don't need to exist within the bantam box of mass-marketability. There's an interview for the strange and grisly, for games that are ferociously attribute and meditative and challenging. Games that are creative. Planescape's not the only game to reach this, but it does it with a grace and charm most others miss.

Badly though: Don't zoom too far in. 1999 has not elderly substantially.

I don't receive much many to add. You've undoubtedly heard people talk close to Planescape for years. If you haven't played it? This is the way to go, for right-down restraint's sake. And if you get played it, fortunate, a replay can't harm. It's that good.

You'll find it connected Steam and GOG. There's bound to be people disappointed Planescape's price went up from $10 to $20 in the process of beingness Enhanced, but these games tend to go connected sale fairly often. I'd expect to see that price drop during the summer sale time of year, at the very least.
